After being laid off for a crappy job that only paid 100% commission, I was eligible for $125/week UC.
There is virtually no public assistance worth looking for, other than federal programs. The run-up in home prices has led a lot of people to over-mortgage their homes.
My wife makes $12/hr as a merchandiser and has been unable to find a full time job in sales (hr previous field). I have been out of work for 14 months, with no prospects in sight. The jobs that I have interviewed for pay $40-$50K, and I was making $50K when I moved here in 1987!
There are no major employers, and the economy is boom or bust (see mining, shale oil exploration, telecomm and cable companies)
